With a child-centered approach, and a commitment to celebrate diversity, the International School of Aruba has designed a language program that aims to encompass native speakers as well as non-native speakers.
The purpose of the native speakers’ instruction program is to provide the students with the opportunity to maintain, continue to develop and refine their language. A basic principle guiding the teaching of Spanish and Dutch as native languages at ISA is the belief that when students develop their oral and literacy skills in Spanish or Dutch, they enhance their literacy development in English and any other languages. Moreover, students eventually returning to continue their education in Spanish or Dutch speaking countries will have a solid language foundation that allows them to make a smooth transition or re-adapting.
In the Native Dutch program, the primary students are tested with the CITO tests in language. In the secondary program, students follow MAVO, HAVO or VWO curricula and take the staats examen, or the CNaVT Dutch proficency tests enabling entry into Dutch Universities.
The instruction program of Spanish as a foreign language focuses on the internationally accepted “Five C’s of Foreign Language Education (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities)” standards issued by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages – ACTFL.
From grades K-12, we offer Spanish and Dutch courses that recognize students’ diverse needs to learn a foreign language, be it either intellectual challenge, understanding other people or culture, or simply to fulfill a graduation requirement. Our program seeks to help students acquire skills to adapt to an ever-changing world by fostering intercultural awareness, and developing communication skills.
Foreign languages have something to offer everyone, and it is with this philosophy in mind that language programs are implemented at ISA.
