ISA Middle School is composed of grades 6-8. All students take core courses in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English. Each grade also takes special classes in Physical Education, Dutch and Spanish. The language classes are divided according to level of proficiency, ranging from beginners through Advanced/Native Speaker sections. In each two-day cycle there will be one period scheduled for special classes such as Art, Drama, and Computers. The rotation of these classes will change each semester.
The block system used in the High School is also in effect in the Middle School. Students take 8 classes of 80 minutes, with alternating days of 4 periods each day. Support is offered for English as a Second Language for those in greatest need.
An Advisory class meets four times per week with an assigned advisor who will help guide and support the students socially, emotionally and academically. Monthly themes include: getting organized, communication, friendship, time management skills, decision making, community service, and future planning. In the fifth advisory time slot available each week, students take Music.
Teachers monitor the progress of students in the Middle School and have weekly team meetings. Communication with parents is emphasized so that home and school work together during this important period of adolescence. A solid foundation of academic and personal development will lead to greater success in high school and beyond.
